Grenade

Grenade was the first album we made and was released on Rouska Records in 1986. It’s a fantastic album that was designed to showcase just how big our vision was. We still really like this album a lot, and we still play several of the songs in our live set.

March was actually the first CX song ever written, and it defined the basic sound of the band from then on.

The cover features James Stewart, from one of the greatest films ever made: It’s a Wonderful Life.

MARCH

I get up at nine, I go to work
I come home at five, I feel so alive
I’m free, I’m free

Nights are for T.V., I’m too tired for sex
I watch my program, it’s me, it’s me
I’m free, I’m free

All I want is freedom
All I want is freedom, freedom

I need my job, but it’s done by machine
I smash my TV, it’s productiviTV
ProductiviTV

I gotta work, I gotta work
I gotta right to work, I’m not a jerk
Tell me what to do

All I want is freedom
All I want is freedom, freedom

I’m looking at the sky, God help me, help me
I follow Jesus, he sets me free, I’m free
Free in the Lord

All I want is freedom
All I want is freedom, freedom

Freedom from hurt
Freedom from pain
Freedom from desire
Freedom from freedom
Freedom

WONDERWORLD

Carrying Churchill’s coffin across the river
Vaulting on the backs of niggers in the pits

Wonderworld

Redesign the future in the past
Doing doggy paddles in a painted sea

Wonderworld

We’re going down to Memphis, riding on a rail
Collision trains and piles of gold, rusting steel and megadeath

Wonderworld

Security from across the sea, security from across the sea
Security come to comfort me in Wonderworld

Wonderworld

Marching on our parents’ graves
Making shoes for the children of tomorrow
So they can walk through trees and fields in

Wonderworld

Corby, Corby, Corby
Wonderworld

Wonderworld

PRESENTS (COME OF AGE)

Let’s all go back in my time machine
My window to the world, it’s hit and myth
Back to old age, swinging Sixties
Swinging from a tree

When I was a child I thought I was a man
I was right
All I needed was a little bit of experience
All I needed was a window
All I needed was a window to the world

So much for nothing

I’ve got a window to the world
In my house
Made in the Sixties
Built of concrete, built of glass
Not built by computer
Built by an idiot
Built by an idiot, yeah, yeah

So much for nothing

When I grow up I’m gonna buy myself a great big bomb
I’m gonna buy a bomb big enough, I’m blow up the future
Then everybody can be happy, everybody will be happy
Happy, happy, happy, happy
Happy, happy, happy, happy

So much for nothing

PICKUP

All dressed up and no address to go to
Strawberry lips, sweet as honey
Let’s go out, let’s go to dinner
Some peace of mind, some piece of money

Pick me up
Put me down
Pick me up

Lemon hair and the groove of Gamelan
Video, video, smile at me
I’m laced up tight, I’m bursting my bonds
Social monkey on a sexual tree

Pick me up
Put me down
Pick me up

I’m bottling up, I’m bottling out
There’s a note in there and it’s all about love
There’s a time and a place, after midnight
A time and a place, and it’s waiting above

Pick me up
Put me down
Pick me up

We’re talking sex, we’re talking drugs
We’re talking life, we’re talking crud

Pick me up
Put me down
Pick me up

POWER

Power, energy
Controlling life, controlling people
Give me power, lots of it
To control my life, to control your life

Power

Power, coming from the speaker
Power, coming from the bass
Creating the future, creating machines
That’s the power in your soul

Power

Power, of the human animal
Stripping away the skin, reaching down, down to the bone
Driving you upwards, driving you crazy
That’s power

Power

Power, call of the wild
It’s ringing in my nervous system, it’s crawling up my spine
It’s burning in my backbrain
It’s gonna be mine, it’s gonna be mine

Power

REPORT FROM THE BACK

Helen Earth’s a young girl
And she never gets much older
Though I see her every day
She always comes this way

Helen, Helen Earth

Helen Earth goes off to sea
Comes back home in time for tea
She tells me all she’s done
It always seems like fun

Helen, Helen Earth

Every night I go downtown
Helen Earth’s always around
Now I know it’s only chance
We hold hands and we dance

Helen, Helen Earth

PRAIRIE BITCH

Switch on

Pina, beautiful angel
Take my hand, lead me
Across the sand
To the promised land

Face the sun
Face the truth
Face the enemy
Oh, Pina, face the truth in me

Fading scars, white lies
T.V. stories
T.V. is everything

I’m falling, falling down
Fall in, fall out
Oh, Pina, I’m your prisoner

Pina, beautiful alien
Dance with me, take my hand
Oh, Pina, be with me

Realpolitik, realpolitik
Liebe, liebepolitik
Oh, Pina
March over me

TV is everything

MOTHERAD

Night falls over the city like a cloak of invisibility
Wrapping around me, wrapping me round
It’s penetrating, it’s reaching down, down, down, down
It’s grabbing my genes and it’s twisting, it’s twisting

I can’t see you, but I know you’re there
You’re the one who’s nursed the human race for centuries, for centuries
I want to leave you, I can’t wait to run away
You had your chance, you twisted me
But you didn’t win

Win
You didn’t win

You think that I can’t live outside you
You surrounded everything with safety
But I won’t eat your food, I won’t drink your milk
I want to grow old and cold and lonely
As long as you don’t win

Win
You didn’t win
